Ride Etiquette
ICC’s ride etiquette reflects our club values: we are diverse & inclusive, fun & friendly, and responsible & fair.
• Ride in defined groups with a nominated leader. Everyone should know who is in the group so no one is left behind. Avoid merging with other groups. Members joining or leaving the group should let the leader know.
• Collective responsibility. The whole group is responsible for the safety and enjoyment of all members. This includes making sure the group sticks together, watching for anyone who may be struggling, and ensuring no-one is dropped.
• Stick within the agreed pace band. Our bands give members flexibility to offer and choose rides at the pace they want. Don’t go beyond this unless all members of the group are comfortable.
• All club rides are no drop by default (except HC) and should go at a pace that is sustainable for all. If someone is dropping off the back, ease up. If the group splits on a hill wait at the top until all have caught up and are ready to go on.
• Groups should normally be a maximum of 10 as this allows for better ride cohesion. Stay separate from other groups so you don’t form a roadblock or lose people.
• Give constructive feedback and be ready to receive it. If anyone is acting in a way which puts them, other members of the group, or the public at risk, or which harms the club’s reputation, explain it to them calmly as soon as possible.
• Maximise the opportunity for members to join rides. We encourage you to post and sign up for rides on the Forum in advance but members should also be able join rides on a Sunday if there’s space. Sunday rides should normally start at Highbury Fields at 0830.
• New members. Leaders should check at the start whether there are people in the group who haven’t ridden the route before and keep an eye on them.
· Safety and comfort. You must wear helmets on all rides and obey the highway code. Please use mudguards in the wet winter months, lights when dark on steady beam, and TT bikes or TT bar extensions only on TT rides.
• Club kit. We encourage members to wear club kit on all our rides. It makes easier to keep track of people and ensure no one is left behind.
