FAQ

Can I Join a CLub ride as a guest to see if I want to join?

At the moment, no, we currently cannot allow guest riders on club rides due to how insurance cover is provided by British Cycling to our members. We organise monthly introductory sessions for non-members who want to get a taste of what it’s like to ride with the club.

How do I become a member?

To join the club, you must first complete an introductory skills session prior to having your membership application accepted. This ensures that all new members are familiar with our procedures and can ride in a group with a level of competency, confidence and safety.

Click here to read about the introductory sessions.

Once you have attended one of these sessions, you can join the club by applying and paying the membership fee on the British Cycling website. Full details here.

Our membership secretary will process your application and be in touch to welcome you to the club and give you access to the club Forum. This usually takes a week, so please be patient. You are welcome to join club rides in the meantime.

Does Membership INclude British Cycling Membership?

If you have not previously been a member of British Cycling, then one year of free Bronze Race level of membership is included when you sign up as an ICC member. You need to apply the code: NEWCMRA when choosing the Bronze Race level membership. This free membership must be activated using the code to take effect. If you would like to upgrade to Silver Race level membership, use the same code to receive a £27 discount.

If you are not intending to race, but would still like to join British Cycling, you can get a £27 discount on their Ride level of membership. This provides £20m third-party insurance for club rides, leisure rides and sportives. Use the code: NEWCMRD when signing up for the Ride level of British Cycling Membership. ICC membership renewals are separate to British Cycling membership renewals (optional, but recommended).

Is Islington a good club for women?

Islington Cycling Club is proud to be home to a diverse and active female membership base. We aim to provide an inclusive and encouraging environment for riders of all levels, from people who are looking to join a club for the first time to more experienced riders and racers looking for their next challenge. For more details please see our page on our women’s activities here, or email women@islington.cc

Do I need to wear a helmet?

Yes. Helmets are required on all club rides.

How far and how fast do you ride?

All our Sunday club rides divide into groups that ride different distances and speeds. We have 4 categories based on average speed on the flat: Green (20 km/h), Silver (25 km/h), Blue (30 km/h), Black (35 km/h), and HC (40km/h). Distances generally vary between 50-200 km and rides are normally posted on the Forum a day or two ahead.

WHAT IS THE CLUB CULTURE?

Our values are our DNA, why we do what we do. They inform our decisions and our vision of cycling in London. They are inspired by our members and what we ask cyclists to aspire to when choosing us as a club.

We are diverse & inclusive, fun and friendly, and responsible and fair. Our Ride Etiquette reflects these values.

We aim to never leave anyone behind, take collective responsibility for the safety and enjoyment of everyone on a ride, and we give and receive constructive feedback.

Our club is run by members, for members. Volunteering is at the heart of everything we do. We put on a wide range of activities for members and encourage everyone to give up a few hours to support these every year.
